I graduated in 2007 as medical doctor at KULeuven. In 2013 I obtained a master degree in health care and hospital management and graduated as a general surgeon in 2014 at KU Leuven. After finishing my residency in cardiac surgery, I completed a training focused on aortic valve repair, Ross procedure and aortic surgery at Cleveland Clinic, Montreal Heart Institute and Institut Mutualiste Montsouris Paris. I received a PhD degree in biomedical sciences in 2018 with a thesis on new strategies in the treatment of aortic aneurysms.

Currently, I am staff member of the Department of Cardiac Surgery at the University Hospitals Leuven. I am consultant in the cardiac surgery department of Imelda Hospital Bonheiden, Jessa Hasselt and ZOL Genk. I am associate professor at the Faculty of Medicine at KU Leuven. I am active within the cardiac surgery research group of the department of cardiovascular sciences.

My clinical activity is focused on minimal invasive mitral valve repair, aortic valve repair, Ross procedures and aortic surgery. I am involved in many national and international society’s and training programs on those procedures.

He obtained a PhD based upon his research in transcatheter valve therapies. Professor Van Mieghem is involved in the percutaneous coronary interventions and structural heart program.

Professor Van Mieghem has published and co-authored over 700 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals. He is principle investigator and steering committee member in multiple ongoing international trials evaluating various coronary and transcatheter valve technologies.
