Prof. Dr. Wilfried Mullens is a cardiologist and heart failure specialist at Ziekenhuis Oost-Limburg in Genk, Belgium, and Professor of Cardiovascular Physiology at Hasselt University. He completed his training in Cardiology and Cardiac Rehabilitation in Belgium in 2005, followed by advanced fellowships in Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplantation (2007) and Electrical Therapies for Heart Failure (2008) at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, USA. In 2009, he obtained his PhD from Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands.

His clinical and research work focuses on heart failure, with particular expertise in congestion and cardiorenal interactions, diuretic therapy, and cardiac resynchronization therapy. He has authored or co-authored more than 400 scientific publications and has an extensive track record in translational and clinical heart failure research. He was the principal investigator of the ADVOR trial (Acetazolamide in Decompensated Heart Failure with Volume Overload), a landmark randomized, double-blind trial in acute heart failure published in The New England Journal of Medicine.

Prof. Mullens previously served as President of the Belgian Working Group on Heart Failure and is currently President of the Heart Failure Association (HFA) of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC).
