Jean-Luc Vachiéry is Clinical Professor of Cardiology in the Department of Cardiology at the Erasme University Hospital, where he his Director of the Pulmonary Vascular Diseases and Heart Failure Clinic.


Jean-Luc received his MD degree with “great honour” from the Université Libre de Bruxelles in 1985. He started his medical training at the Erasme University Hospital (Brussels) where he successively received a certification in internal medicine (1992) and cardiology (1994). 


He has been involved as investigator or steering committee member in major clinical trials in pulmonary hypertension. He has an extensive track record on publication in the field of pulmonary vascular diseases and has successfully mentored medical students and junior faculty in Cardiology (including 3 PhDs).


Jean-Luc was the Chairman of the Working Group on Pulmonary Circulation and Right Ventricular Function of the European Society of Cardiology (2006-2008), Chairman of the Working Group on Heart Failure of the Belgian Society of Cardiology (2008-2010), Chairman of the PH council at the ISHLT (2002-204, 2015-2017), and Chairman of the PVD interdisciplinary network at the ISHLT (2020-2022).


At the World symposium on PH, he has been a member of the Task Force on interventions for PAH in 2003, has co-chaired the Task Force on PH due to left heart diseases 2013 and 2018, and was the senior adviser for the same TF in 2024. He is a member of the scientific committee at the WSPH association. He has been member of the task force for guidelines on PH (ESC/ERS) in 2009, 2015 and 2022 where he served as section editor on PH associated with left heart disease.
