On 10 October 2025, EU finance ministers will discuss the Commission’s proposal to revise the Tobacco Taxation Directive. The proposal aims to raise minimum tobacco taxes across the EU and, for the first time, include novel products (such as e-cigarettes and nicotine pouches). Scientific evidence demonstrates that nicotine, regardless of its mode of delivery, has significant and lasting effects on cardiovascular health.
Given the widespread use of these products - especially among young people- and their frequent perception as harmless despite health risks, as well as their favourable taxation in many Member States, it is crucial that all ministries support this initiative.
The BSC calls on finance minister Jan Jambon to vote in favour of the proposal.
